Why conversion rate drives website ROI

For most businesses, a website pays for itself not through more traffic but by turning more of the visitors you already have into enquiries and sales. Small improvements in speed, clarity, trust signals and checkout can move the conversion rate — and because that improvement applies to every visitor, the effect compounds.

The formulas

Monthly revenue = Visitors × Conversion rate × Average value
Extra yearly revenue = (Target − Current monthly revenue) × 12
First-year ROI = (Extra yearly revenue − Project cost) ÷ Project cost × 100
Payback (months) = Project cost ÷ Extra monthly revenue

How to use it

Take monthly visitors and conversion rate from Google Analytics, use your real average order or deal value, and set a target conversion rate you believe is realistic. Be conservative: model a modest lift first, then a stretch scenario.

Worked example (hypothetical numbers)

A site gets 5,000 visitors a month, converts 1% and has an average order of KES 3,000: KES 150,000 a month. Raising conversion to 1.5% gives KES 225,000 — KES 75,000 more each month, or KES 900,000 a year. Against a KES 150,000 project, first-year ROI is 500% and payback is 2 months.

Things to remember

This uses revenue, not profit — apply your margin for a stricter view. It also assumes traffic stays the same; SEO improvements could raise it. And it does not include hosting and maintenance costs, which should go into the project cost.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a conversion?

Whatever matters to your business: a sale, a quote request, a WhatsApp click or a booked call. Use the same definition for current and target rates.

How do I improve my conversion rate?

Common levers are page speed, clear offers, visible prices or next steps, trust signals, simpler forms and mobile-friendly checkout.

Is a higher target always realistic?

No. Use your own analytics and test changes. This is a planning model, not a prediction.
